Best Way to Take CBD
So you want to experiment with cannabis and want to know the best way to take CBD oil and other cannabis products. If you are interested in taking CBD for your self-care, want to know the benefits of taking CBD and Cannabis then take a look at the first part of this 2 part blog. There is so much information out there and it is not surprising if you are feeling a bit confused by it all. In this blog, I will focus on the best way to take CBD for yourself, your children, and family. I will include tinctures, capsules, gummies and more. But first, let’s address what CBD is:
What is CBD?
CBD is one of many constituents of the Cannabis plant -- which many know as the Marijuana plant -- called cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds. There are a 113 known cannabinoids. CBD is just one of them. You might have heard of THC. THC is the part of the Cannabis plant that has psychoactive properties -- by that I mean, the properties that get humans “feeling high” -- however, CBD does not. CBD products available for retail should not contain this ingredient that makes you high.
Is CBD safe?
Yes, there has never been any deaths or serious adverse events reported from taking CBD. If you are concerned that taking CBD might “get you high” please know that in order for a CBD product to be on the shelf legally, it has to contain less than 0.3% THC, which is very close to zero.
In 2018, the FDA approved a CBD medication named Epidiolex, available via prescription for children with Dravet’s syndrome, a form of epilepsy. However, please keep in mind that CBD in the market place has not been regulated by the FDA.
Are CBD products reliable?
Not at this time. In 2017, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania bought 84 CBD products. Of those 84 CBD products, 70% were mislabelled, meaning they contained more or less CBD then indicated on the bottle. Furthermore, some products contained more than the 0.3% THC legally allowed in the product.* CBD might be safe, but after learning about what these researchers found, you might not get the results you are looking for or you might get unwanted side effects.
For these reasons, safety, reliability, potency and quality and efficacy are the factors I consider first.
Next, consider the quality of carrier oils. The best is natural and organic and cold-pressed hemp oil, MCT oil from coconut oil, or extra virgin coconut oil. Some CBD products contain synthetic dyes and synthetic carriers like propylene glycol which is a solvent and can be toxic to the human body.
Listed below are different routes of administration: I mean the ways to take CBD
Personally, my favorite route of administration is through an oil tincture. I like it because you can control the dose. You might consider getting a higher dose such as a 1500 mg bottle. This means that there is 1500mg total in the entire 30 mL bottle, not per dose. Therefore you can manipulate the dose and take the minimal amount you need. Some people get help with less than 25 mg and a few drops will suffice, some will need greater than that if they are in pain, so this way you can individualize the dose. I don’t think water is the best form since CBD is fat soluble and the fat will help you absorb it. Some companies explain that they use nanotechnology making the droplet of hemp oil so tiny they claim better absorption. This may be true, but standardized extracts in oil are what were used in some of the preliminary research on CBD and that appeared to be absorbable enough to get results.
I mentioned the drug earlier, Epidiolex which again is available via prescription liquid-form for children with a form of epilepsy called Dravet’s syndrome.
Herbal oil pills are great and usually do form some sort of standard of dose like 10 mg or 25mg per cap. They are usually in a fat carrier oil and may be more convenient to take then a tincture. You can stick one in your pocket or purse in a pill box or baggie, where a glass tincture is not as portable.
3. Topical Salves
Salves are great, especially if you are taking it for skin issues or joint pain, however, since it is a salve, it is very hard to standardize the dose you are putting on your skin. Some days you will give yourself more than other days.
Gummies are a popular and fun route of entry, but with gummies usually comes a bunch of sugar and no naturopath or nutritionist or parent can justify sugar being good for your health. Not to mention the fact that some contain synthetic dyes.
These are perhaps not as fun a route of entry as a gummy, but are available for those who cannot swallow or who are looking to support rectal or reproductive health. An important note here is that it will enter into the blood stream by essentially seeping through the cell walls and bypass digestion.
Vaporizers are a hot trend as well, but not all people are used to this portal of entry and you will have to purchase a vaporizer. I’m sure someone else has written a blog about the best vaporizer and what to look for, but this is not my expertise. The biggest concern is some of the vape fluid uses the solvent propylene glycol that was mentioned earlier in this article. However, if your vape fluid is created without chemicals, it is probably an excellent way of consuming CBD.
6. Honorable Mention: CBD Edibles
Some business venturers are excited about creating an edible CBD product, for example CBD infused cupcakes, bars, lattes, honey, and even cooking oil, however, here in New York, the Department of Health puts down its foot saying there is truly no way to create regulatory standards. If you are in any other state, the CBD cupcakes may taste good, but you don’t really know what you are getting. Be aware.
So, I hope you got the straight facts on CBD and all the ways to take it. For self-care and experimentation I suggest using hemp oil infused CBD by the company ECS. Alert! Many people think that hemp oil contains CBD. Hemp oil contains a whole lot of good nutrition, but not CBD.
